Building a Stronger Manitoba: Celebrating the Impact of Local Initiatives
The conversation around supporting local has gained momentum in recent months, but it extends far beyond business transactions. Across Manitoba, nonprofit organizations are working every day to build stronger, more connected communities—through mentorship, advocacy, wellness programs, environmental efforts, and more.
In this blog, we are highlighting five initiatives that left a meaningful impression on our team and that we had the privilege of supporting during the first few months of the year. Through this reflection, we hope to offer a closer look at each organization’s mission and the role they play in creating a more vibrant and supportive community.
Siloam Mission: Supporting Dignity, Stability, and Hope
Siloam Mission plays a vital role in supporting individuals experiencing homelessness and poverty in Winnipeg. Through a range of essential services—including emergency shelter, supportive housing, and mental health and wellness programs—Siloam helps people regain stability and take steps toward independence. Each day, the organization serves over 350 meals, providing consistent access to nutritious food. Their housing programs, which include both transitional and long-term options, offer safe spaces where individuals can rebuild their lives with dignity. These efforts are further supported by counselling services, wellness initiatives, and spiritual care, creating a holistic approach to recovery and well-being.
In addition to these critical services, Siloam has established Siloam Laundry Service (SLS), a social enterprise that not only meets the organization’s laundry needs but also provides meaningful employment opportunities for people working to overcome homelessness. This program offers job training, stable employment, and a supportive environment, helping individuals regain their independence. When Siloam was first considering this venture, it was fulfilling to be able to share our experiences and offer a tour of our operations, providing them with insights into the potential of this initiative.
Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of supporting Siloam Mission through volunteer work in the kitchen and clothing donation areas, an annual tradition at Quintex. These moments serve as a powerful reminder of the ongoing need in our community—and of the tireless work Siloam does to meet it with compassion, consistency, and care.
United Way: Creating Pathways to a Better Tomorrow
United Way Winnipeg works to improve lives and strengthen communities by addressing critical needs in education, mental health, poverty, and employment. Through a network of partnerships with local agencies and programs, United Way focuses on long-term, community-driven solutions that create lasting change. Their work supports a wide range of initiatives—from early childhood development and youth mentorship to crisis support and financial empowerment—ensuring that people from all walks of life have the opportunity to thrive.
Over the years, our team has proudly supported United Way through a variety of fundraising efforts. What began as a one-day event has grown into a week-long tradition that brings our workplace together around a shared cause. From our annual chili cook-off to more recent additions like bake sales, these activities have been met with enthusiasm and generosity. United Way Week has become a highlight in our calendar—not only for the fun and camaraderie it brings, but for the meaningful impact it helps support across the city.
Dream Factory: Creating Joyful Moments for Manitoba Families
The Dream Factory is dedicated to supporting children in Manitoba who are facing life-threatening illnesses by creating moments of joy, comfort, and togetherness. While the organization is best known for granting dreams, they also offer opportunities closer to home that give families a break from hospital routines and the chance to simply enjoy time together.
One example includes taking families to local games or events, where they can spend a few hours away from medical appointments and daily stress. With more space to relax and the occasional visit from mascots like Mick E. Moose, these outings offer kids a chance to just be kids—and give families the opportunity to reconnect in a setting filled with smiles and excitement.
Fight for Charity: Stepping Into the Ring for a Greater Cause
Fight for Charity is an annual event that unites local business professionals for a cause bigger than the sport itself. Participants commit to months of intense training before stepping into the ring—not just for competition, but to raise funds and awareness for a specific charity or initiative each year.
Beyond the spectacle, Fight for Charity is about community, determination, and making a tangible impact. Proceeds from the event go directly to supporting a selected cause—whether it’s mental health, youth programs, or family services—ensuring that the money raised creates real change. This blend of personal commitment and collective purpose makes the event a powerful way to bring people together while making a lasting difference for Manitobans.
A few years ago, we were proud to have one of our own QCC Sales team members participate in the event. This year, we were excited to cheer on another colleague as they stepped into the ring, showing their dedication to both fitness and giving back. It’s always inspiring to see our team support such an impactful initiative, both inside and outside the ring.
Science First: Empowering Communities Through Environmental Education
Science First is dedicated to fostering science literacy and advocating for environmental conservation in Manitoba. Their work goes beyond educating youth; it’s about inspiring the next generation to understand and address the environmental challenges that impact us all. By promoting evidence-based policies and sustainable practices, they are helping build a stronger, more informed community that can make a real difference in protecting our planet.
One key initiative, World Water Day, focuses on educating young people about the importance of water conservation and how it affects the health of our local environment. In a world facing growing environmental challenges, understanding the need for sustainable resource management is more crucial than ever. Science First is helping to shape a future where the environment and community thrive together, creating lasting change that benefits everyone.
Supporting local isn’t just about businesses—it’s about the organizations and initiatives that help build and sustain our communities in meaningful ways. Whether it’s providing essential services to those in need, advocating for the protection of our environment, or supporting families through moments of joy, these organizations embody the true spirit of community. Their work contributes to a stronger, more connected Manitoba, and we are fortunate to be able to support and celebrate their efforts.
As we reflect on the impact of these initiatives, we’re reminded that the strength of a community isn’t solely defined by its economy or its businesses, but by the people and organizations that work tirelessly to lift each other up. By recognizing and supporting these efforts, we contribute to a brighter, more inclusive future for all Manitobans.
