How Switching to 280 LED Lights Saved Us Energy

LEDs have come a long way since they were first introduced. Once met with scepticism, they are now widely recognized for their efficiency and lower environmental impact. For individuals and organizations alike, LEDs are a small step toward more sustainable practices.

In 2020, we replaced all 280 light fixtures in our facility with LED lighting, taking a manageable step that aligned with our ongoing efforts to operate more sustainably and responsibly.

LED Lighting: Efficient, Sustainable, and Built to Last

LED lighting is widely recognized for its efficiency and environmental benefits. Unlike traditional incandescent or fluorescent bulbs, LEDs use significantly less energy to produce the same amount of light, reducing electricity consumption while maintaining consistent, high-quality illumination throughout a facility.

Beyond energy savings, LEDs have a much longer lifespan, requiring fewer replacements and reducing waste and maintenance resources. They also do not contain hazardous materials like mercury, making disposal safer and less harmful to the environment.

For organizations looking to operate more sustainably, these factors make LED lighting a meaningful step. It improves day-to-day operations while supporting broader efforts to reduce environmental impact.

Why LED Lighting Mattered to Us

Switching out a single bulb might seem minor, but even minor changes can have a meaningful impact and inspire further steps toward sustainability. Replacing every fixture in an entire facility, however, is a larger undertaking.

This project was one of the last initiatives led by our former Lead Engineer before retirement. It also provided an opportunity to explore other areas within our organization that could benefit from provincial programs supporting energy efficiency. The LED upgrade reinforced both operational efficiency and environmental responsibility.

Our Experience Upgrading to LED Lighting: Simple Steps, Bright Results

The LED upgrade was completed in stages to minimize disruption. We partnered with a company that oversaw all the Manitoba Hydro forms and rebate paperwork, simplifying the administrative side of the project. Installation took place over several weeks and was often scheduled on Fridays to avoid impacting production.

The LED lights brightened workspaces and, unlike incandescent or fluorescent bulbs, emitted less heat. This created a more comfortable environment in the production section, particularly during the warmer months.

The project demonstrated that straightforward, well-planned upgrades can improve efficiency and working conditions without major disruptions.

The Payoff: Long-Term Value and Continuous Improvement

The benefits of switching to LED lighting extend beyond immediate energy savings. Over time, the upgrade reduces our environmental footprint while creating brighter, more comfortable workspaces for staff.

Our Lead Engineer, Frank, emphasized the value of taking a proactive approach. Fluorescent bulbs will eventually be phased out, so taking advantage of rebate programs now allows us to implement changes before they become mandatory. This mindset of continuous improvement also guides other efficiency initiatives, such as steam trap analysis through Efficiency Manitoba, helping us identify achievable ways to operate more sustainably.

Even small, well-considered upgrades like this can have lasting effects — improving efficiency, supporting sustainability goals, and enhancing the work environment.
